Review: Certification in ESG Investing by CFA Institute

Updated: Nov 26, 2023

During my preparation for the Certification in ESG Investment exam offered by the CFA Institute, I encountered a LinkedIn post expressing disdain for the exam experience. The author criticized its lack of calculation methods and repetitive content across chapters. This negative feedback initially cast doubt on my decision to pursue the exam, yet I was determined to form my own opinion.

Upon delving into the exam's content, several notable aspects caught my attention:

Firstly, the exam materials didn't oversell ESG investments but rather acknowledged industry challenges candidly. Unlike many other exam providers that tend to promote their programs, the study material was refreshingly unbiased. It presented ESG as an alternative investment method without an overly optimistic viewpoint, providing further readings and links to support claims while also addressing sensitive topics and suggesting areas for improvement in integrating the ESG framework across organizations.

Secondly, the exam efficiently synthesized the diverse components of ESG. With the landscape of ESG information being scattered across various platforms and lacking cohesive online resources, this exam acted as a comprehensive guide. It adeptly covered the history, market dynamics, factors related to environment, social, and governance, engagement and stewardship significance, analysis and integration, portfolio construction and management, as well as mandates and reporting, offering a consolidated understanding of these multifaceted elements.

Moreover, the exam served its purpose as a foundational certification. It refrained from specifying a particular calculation method, considering the evolving nature of the industry. This flexibility avoids potential obsolescence and allows for adaptability as the industry standards evolve. The absence of a rigid calculation method ensures that successful candidates possess a broad understanding of ESG principles rather than focusing solely on specific metrics.

In conclusion, my preparation for the exam proved insightful. The material provided a comprehensive yet nuanced understanding of the ESG framework, emphasizing its functions and areas for improvement. While the ESG industry demands more attention and support, I view this certification as an essential catalyst, laying the groundwork for creating long-term value for leaders and investors, both present and future.
